A-melding
The a-melding (monthly report from employer) is a report that employers submit each month. It provides Nav (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration), Statistics Norway (SSB) and the Norwegian Tax Administration with information about:
- Employees' income
- Employment relationships
- Withholding tax
- Employer's national insurance contributions
- Financial activities tax
A-melding data can only be used to update defined-contribution pensions. If the company has other pension products or employee insurance schemes, these must be updated manually.
- Register DNB as your pension provider (org. no. 914 782 007)
- Submit an a-melding every month.
- Check that the data from the a-melding (monthly report from employer) is correct.
- Review changes carefully. If something is incorrect, you must correct this in the business portal and update the a-melding (monthly report from employer) to prevent the error from recurring.
- If you do not submit a-melding data yourself, you should review this together with your accountant.
Change of organisation number: Inform us as quickly as possible if the company changes its organisation number. The agreement will not be updated if the organisation number in the a-melding (monthly report from employer) does not match the one registered in the pension agreement with us.
The a-melding (monthly report from employer) contains monthly salary. DNB must convert this to annual salary in order to calculate the correct pension for employees. In addition, there will be a holiday pay supplement, which forms part of the pension basis.
The employment percentage is calculated as follows:
- Salaried employees:We use the stated employment percentage that is registered in the a-melding (monthly report from employer).
- Hourly paid employees:The employment percentage is calculated based on the number of hours stated for the employee in the a-melding (monthly report from employer).
- Combination of fixed and hourly paid employees:The employment percentage is the sum of the stated fixed full-time equivalent (FTE) percentage and the number of registered hours stated in the a-melding (monthly report from employer).
The employment percentage registered in the pension agreement may differ from the employment percentage the member is employed at. This may, for example, be due to a member with hourly pay having worked fewer hours than the agreed full-time equivalent (FTE) percentage, or that salaried employees have had a deduction in salary and hours that are deducted.
Yes, you can make changes in the portal even if you are on a-melding.
Remember: If the changes are due to errors in the a-melding (monthly report from employer), you must also correct the a-melding (monthly report from employer) next time to avoid the same error.
You will find the overview under the agreement overview in the portal.
Do you have other types of salary beyond these that you wish to be pensionable? Please contact us.
- Corrected a-melding for previous periods: We are unable to retrieve corrected a-melding reports retrospectively. Changes must be updated manually in the portal.
- You can submit a-melding for the same period multiple times right up until we have retrieved the data. These will be merged before the agreement is updated.
- A-melding with errors: Members must be corrected manually in the portal. Remember to correct the error in the next a-melding to prevent it from happening again.
This may apply to:
- Employees who have membership in another pension scheme
- Employees who are not members of the National Insurance Scheme
- Owner(s)
If you have employees who should not be updated with data from the A-melding (monthly report from employer), please contact us.
The pension agreement is updated every month. We retrieve data from the A-melding (monthly report from employer) after the Norwegian Tax Administration's submission deadline, which is the 5th of the following month.
Salary is adjusted for the payment month, whilst registrations and deregistrations will be retrieved retrospectively, but not further back than 15 months.
We retrieve the following information:
- Employment date
- Termination date and reasons for termination
- Salary that is relevant for the pension basis
- Full-time equivalent (FTE) percentage and/or working hours
- Information about employees who are on sick leave, on leave of absence or temporarily laid off
We do not retrieve:
- New employees' telephone numbers and email addresses
- Employee number and/or department number
This must be registered in the portal
The rules for employees on leave of absence or temporary lay-off are described in the pension agreement.
Freelancers are not enrolled in the pension scheme via the a-melding (monthly report from employer). If a freelancer is already a member of the agreement, they are treated as an ordinary member.
Pension agreements are generally updated automatically with information from the a-melding (monthly report from employer). This is the recommended solution and ensures correct and full accumulation of pension entitlements for all employees.
In some cases, there may be a need for other ways to update the agreement. These are exceptions. Please contact us if the a-melding (monthly report from employer) does not suit your company.

Tips
Remember this when submitting annual accounts.
Invoices are sent once a month, 14 days before the due date. This applies to AvtaleGiro, EHF invoices and giro.
Management costs
These are costs you as an employer pay for us to manage the money for your employees and the company's contribution and premium funds.
Administration cost
These are costs you pay for us to operate the agreement you have with us.
All companies have contribution and premium funds. When the company pays in too much in contributions, this is transferred to the contribution and premium fund. For example, if you have employees who are deregistered from the pension scheme retrospectively, you have paid in extra, or paid the same invoice twice.
We transfer into the contribution and premium fund if:
- You have made extra payments or duplicate payments
- You have deregistered an employee from the agreement retrospectively
Tips
The contribution fund can be used to cover the contributions on your next invoice. The premium fund can be used to cover the risk premium on your next invoice.
You can easily get an overview of your invoices by logging into the portal.
If payment is not received, you will receive two payment reminders after two weeks and six weeks after the original due date.
If the invoice is still not paid, we will automatically terminate the agreement.
Any overpayment will be transferred to the policy's fund. No credit note is issued for overpayments or double payments.
The pension basis is calculated from salary reported in the a-melding (monthly report from employer). The a-melding (monthly report from employer) contains the actual salary paid for each individual month, and not a fixed registered annual salary.
Since the a-melding (monthly report from employer) is reported in arrears, whilst pension is invoiced in advance, the most recently available reported monthly salary is used as the basis for calculating pension contributions for a future period. The monthly salary is then converted to an annual salary by multiplying it by 12.16. This factor is determined by Finance Norway and ensures that holiday pay is included evenly in pensionable salary throughout the year.
If an employee has variable pay, for example hourly wages, bonuses or salary that varies from month to month, the calculated annual salary – and therefore the pension basis – may also vary.
This may result in the invoiced pension amount changing from month to month. Any discrepancies are adjusted when we receive new a-meldings.
Employees receive the contribution into their account when the invoice has been paid.
Frequently asked questions
A-melding: Most companies update salary and full-time equivalent (FTE) percentage via a-melding. A-melding data is retrieved every month.
Direct update: You can also make changes related to employees directly in the business portal.
File from payroll system: Some of our customers submit payroll data by uploading the FNO Industry Standard File in the business portal. The Industry Standard File must be submitted each month. Contact your payroll provider to enquire whether they support this, and then contact DNB to get started.
The employee is automatically enrolled in or withdrawn from the pension scheme if you use the a-melding to update. If you update directly in the business portal or use a file from the payroll system, you must ensure that the employee is enrolled or withdrawn yourself.
The employee will receive information about the membership approximately 30 days after enrolment.
Employees who are withdrawn from the pension scheme will retain their accumulated capital in the form of a pension capital certificate.
In the event of major organisational changes where working conditions continue as before in practice, the pension agreement can be transferred to a new organisation number. Employees will then retain their rights.
If your company is undergoing a change such as:
- Change of legal form
- Business combination of enterprises (merger)
- Division of enterprise (demerger)
- New owner/business transfer
- Change of organisation number, where operations in reality continue unchanged
You can still maintain the pension scheme with us.
How to do it:
Complete and send us change of organisation number (PDF)
or
in the event of demerger/merger (PDF)Completed forms should be sent to kundepostbestand.liv@dnb.no
If the company does not meet the requirements to have a pension agreement, the pension agreement may be discontinued.
In the event of non-payment or that the company has not registered any employees within two years, the agreement will be automatically terminated.
When switching pension provider, the termination notice must be sent via the new pension provider, in accordance with industry standards.
If you wish to terminate the company's pension agreement, you can send us this form by email:pensjon.bedrift@dnb.no
The pension basis is the salary the employee receives from the company, including holiday pay. Overtime pay, taxable benefits in kind, expense allowances and other variable or temporary supplements may be excluded.
For employees with hourly wages, annual salary is calculated by multiplying the hourly wage by the number of hours a full-time equivalent (FTE) in the company corresponds to, and adding holiday pay.
Self-employed individuals who do not receive a salary must state their estimated personal income as the salary basis.
This is because the person in question may have a condition that leads to disability. A person who becomes incapacitated for work must still remain in the retirement pension savings scheme.
The person in question may also be entitled to a disability pension, if the company has this provision in place.
Companies with 15 employees or more are, in accordance with the Norwegian Act on Defined-Contribution Pension Schemes (the Defined-Contribution Pension Act), paragraph 2-6, required to have a steering committee. The steering committee does not have decision-making authority, but must provide statements on matters relating to the management and administration of the pension agreement.
